Dynamic Cupping vs. Static Cupping

Gliding cups and stationary cups are two common techniques in cupping therapy, and they create very different effects in the body.

Gliding Cups (Dynamic Cupping)

How it works:
Oil or lotion is applied, and the cups are moved across the skin while suction is maintained.

Benefits:

  • Increases circulation over a larger area

  • Helps warm up tissues (great before deeper work)

  • Promotes lymphatic drainage

  • Reduces muscle tension without intense marking

  • Feels more like a massage—clients often find it relaxing

Best for:

  • Large muscle groups (back, quads, hamstrings)

  • Clients new to cupping

  • Pre-event or general wellness sessions

  • Those who prefer less intense marks

Stationary Cups (Static Cupping)

How it works:
Cups are placed on specific points and left in place for several minutes.

Benefits:

  • Targets deep muscle knots and trigger points

  • Helps break up adhesions and stagnation

  • Can provide more intense decompression of tissue

  • Often produces visible marks (therapeutic response, not bruising)

Best for:

  • Chronic tension or stubborn tight areas

  • Trigger points (upper traps, low back, glutes)

  • Clients familiar with cupping

  • Therapeutic or corrective sessions

 When to Combine Them

Many therapists use both in one session:

  • Start with gliding to warm tissue

  • Follow with stationary on problem areas

  • Finish with light gliding to flush the area

Here at JMP, our licensed massage therapists often use cupping to help clients find relief and release from muscle pain. We are open 7 days a week to offer our services to clients and our team is eager to help you find relaxation and relief from pain!
