How to Balance Exercise During the Holidays

Balancing exercise during the holidays can be tricky — schedules get packed, routines get disrupted, and temptations multiply — but it’s absolutely possible (and even enjoyable) to stay active without stressing about it. Here are some practical ways to strike that balance:

1. Set Realistic Goals

  • Adjust your expectations: Instead of aiming for long workouts, commit to shorter, consistent sessions (like 20–30 minutes).

  • Focus on maintaining, not maximizing: Your goal is to stay active and feel good — not necessarily to hit personal records.

2. Schedule It (But Stay Flexible)

  • Plan your workouts around your events — mornings often work best before the day fills up.

  • Be flexible: If plans change, swap in a walk, stretch, or quick bodyweight circuit instead of skipping movement entirely.

3. Keep It Short and Efficient

When time is tight, prioritize workouts that deliver results quickly:

  • HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training): 15–20 minutes of alternating effort and recovery.

  • Full-body circuits: Push-ups, squats, lunges, planks — no equipment needed.

  • Mini workouts: 10 minutes here and there still add up.

4. Make Movement Social

  • Suggest family walks, snowball fights, or holiday hikes.

  • Invite friends to join a workout class or yoga session before holiday meals.

  • Turn chores (decorating, cooking, cleaning) into active time — it all counts!

5. Prioritize Recovery and Rest

  • Holidays can be stressful — remember that sleep and relaxation are part of fitness, too.

  • Light yoga, stretching, or breathing exercises can help manage holiday tension and improve recovery.

 6. Balance Food and Fun Mindfully

  • Enjoy holiday treats without guilt — exercise isn’t punishment.

  • Move for energy, mood, and health, not just to “burn off” calories.

7. Have a Post-Holiday Plan

  • Decide when and how you’ll return to your usual routine after the holidays.

  • Even writing down one or two goals for January can help you bounce back smoothly.

Here at JMP, we strive to help our clients attain their fitness goals and with the holidays coming up, it can be tricky. We are open 7 days a week to be available for 30 mins or 60 mins to get your workout in during this busy time of year.
