Finding Relaxation During A Massage
Ooh yes — massages can be prime relaxation time, but sometimes the mind doesn't get the memo, right? Here's how to get the most out of your massage and actually relax during it:
🧠 Before the Massage – Set the Tone
Arrive early: Give yourself a few minutes to chill, use the restroom, and mentally shift into “relax mode.”
Communicate preferences: Let the therapist know what you like—pressure level, areas to focus on or avoid, music volume, etc.
Leave your phone behind: Put it on silent or leave it in the car so your brain doesn't stay in “alert mode.”
🧘♀️ During the Massage – Mind & Body Tricks
Focus on your breath: Deep, slow breathing signals to your nervous system that it's okay to relax.
Do a mental body scan: Gently bring awareness to different areas as they’re being worked on—this keeps you present and helps release tension.
Don’t fight your thoughts: If your brain won’t shut up, let the thoughts drift by like clouds—no need to “force” stillness.
Let go of tension consciously: When you notice yourself tensing (especially in the jaw, hands, or shoulders), intentionally soften those muscles.
🌿 After the Massage – Keep the Calm Going
Drink water: Helps flush out any toxins released during the massage.
Move slowly: Give yourself time to transition—don't jump back into a hectic to-do list.
Avoid stimulation: Keep the phone on do-not-disturb, play chill music, or just sit for a bit.
Take a nap or stretch gently: Let your body soak it all in.
Here at JMP, we have a team of amazing massage therapists that all have the common goal of helping our clients find relief and relaxation during their hands-on therapy sessions. As much as the therapists will do their best to help clients relax, there are things clients can do on their end to help themselves relax! Come on in and relax with a therapeutic massage with hot stones, steamed towels, or red light therapy!
